Sisal Demo Farm Visit and Learning

Sep, 11, 2025. Our one-acre model sisal farm continues to thrive as a practical learning hub for local communities in Taita Taveta. Recently, the farm hosted 60 representatives from women’s groups in Kasigau and Sagalla wards for an experiential learning visit aimed at promoting sisal farming as a sustainable and climate-smart livelihood.

During the visit, participants were introduced to the benefits of sisal as a climate-resilient crop. Unlike many other crops, sisal requires minimal rainfall, making it ideal for arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) such as Taita Taveta.

Beyond its environmental benefits, sisal provides communities with economic opportunities, ranging from commercial sales of sisal fiber to value-added products, such as basket weaving, which is already a traditional skill for many women in the area.

The impact of the model farm is spreading rapidly. So far, five farmers have established sisal plantations, collectively covering over 26 acres. This growing adoption reflects a strong community shift toward climate-smart agriculture, reducing vulnerability to prolonged drought while strengthening livelihoods.

This work is made possible through the Creating Value for Wildlife and People in the Tsavo Landscape Project, funded by the TUI Care Foundation and implemented in partnership with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF). Together, we are supporting communities to embrace climate-resilient farming practices that protect both people and the environment.

We encourage community members, partners, and supporters to visit our model farm and experience firsthand how sisal farming is transforming lives and building climate resilience.

By partnering with us, you can help empower women’s groups to expand their initiatives, support sustainable livelihoods, and contribute to a greener and more resilient future for Taita Taveta.
