March, 31, 2026. At the frontline of conservation in the Tsavo landscape, where the survival of wildlife is increasingly intertwined with the resilience of local communities, the need for well trained and highly skilled Community rangers has never been more urgent. From rising human wildlife conflict to persistent threats such as poaching and increasing habitat degradation, today’s conservation challenges demand more than presence they demand professionalism, precision, and preparedness.
It is against this backdrop that 46 community rangers completed an intensive 21 day training at the School of Conservation and Research Centre within Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
This milestone brings the total number of rangers supported through a collaborative skills development effort to 150, underscoring a growing investment in building a strong, professional frontline for conservation.
Supported by African Wildlife Foundation through the Building Biodiversity Resilience in Southern Kenya project, funded by the Embassy of Sweden, the training brought together rangers from Taita Wildlife Conservancy, Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, Kambanga Wildlife Conservancy, TTWCA, Kasigau Wildlife Conservancy, Choke Conservancy, Amaka Ranch, Dawida Ranch, Lake Jipe Conservancy, Mgeno Wildlife Conservancy, Izera Ranch, Lualenyi Ranching Co Ltd, Shumba Valley Conservancy and Maungu Wildlife Conservancy.
Throughout the 21 day training, they were equipped with essential skills in patrol management, bushcraft, wildlife monitoring, communication, community engagement, drills, and ranger safety and wellbeing. During the pass out ceremony, outstanding officers were also recognized for excellence.
Fatuma Mumo from Kambanga as the best all round, Bajila Bashoro from Mgeno as the best in drill, and Domtilah Wakesho and Francis Nguzo from TTWCA as the best in leadership, reflecting the calibre of rangers now ready to safeguard wildlife and the landscapes they depend on.
