Overview

This project is being supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) /CDRI through the Climate-Resilient Animal Fund (RECAF) Initiative.

General Objective

To enhance livestock productivity, climate resilience, gender equity, and youth participation in Taita Taveta County, Kenya, by deploying a climate-smart, data-driven livestock management model. 

Specific Objectives

  • Improve livestock productivity and resilience by enhancing herd genetics, strengthening disease control, and optimizing farm management while integrating climate-smart practices to mitigate environmental challenges.
  • Reduce operational costs and improve service efficiency by integrating breeding, vaccination, and advisory services into a centralized platform, ensuring cost-effective and accessible livestock management solutions.
  • Accelerate the adoption of digital livestock management among smallholder farmers by providing user-friendly digital tools, financial incentives, and targeted outreach, ensuring accessibility for women, youth, and vulnerable farmers.
  • Advance gender equity by conducting gender risk assessments and implementing transformative interventions that promote women’s active participation in livestock management while addressing social barriers and fostering inclusive engagement with male farmers.
  • Empower youth in livestock farming by defining clear roles in project activities, offering targeted training and mentorship, and creating leadership opportunities to scale their involvement in the sector.
