Mar, 25, 2025. Today, JOKIMA CBO, a women-led enterprise in Kasigau Wildlife Conservancy, received 30 Galla goats, made possible through the ongoing implementation of Component 3 of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 6 funded project: poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking in Kenya through an integrated approach implemented in partnership with Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association.
The project aims to strengthen community wildlife conservancies within the Tsavo Ecosystem by establishing income-generating activities that enhance local livelihoods while aligning with conservation goals.
A key focus of the project is developing goat breeding enterprises in Mbale and Kasigau Conservancies.
This initiative provides the necessary resources, training, and infrastructure to help these women-led groups successfully manage goat rearing, improve animal health and productivity, and tap into local and regional markets.
Formed through the RISE project, JOKIMA CBO brings together three talented basket-weaving community groups: Kishoe, Lukundo, and Jora-Safina D.
In 2024, JOKIMA received 16 Galla goats, and within just six months, the group has witnessed remarkable success with 5 new births!
Galla goats are a highly sought-after breed for their milk, meat, and skins, all of which are in strong demand and are well-suited to arid and semi-arid regions, offering multiple benefits in drought-prone areas, including drought resilience, low maintenance needs, efficient use of scarce resources, and contributions to food security and local economies.
Their adaptability to harsh environments makes them an ideal livestock choice in the Tsavo landscape.
The progress we are seeing in locally-led conservation efforts is not just environmental, but also economical.
These goats will help to improve the socio-economic standards of the community, enabling them to better withstand climate-related shocks and protect their livelihoods.
Together, with our partners, we are committed to supporting communities in exploring new opportunities, diversifying revenue streams, and building resilience.
